How hydraulic casing closure works on GE D11 steam turbines (and why locking collars matter)

On a GE D11 steam turbine the upper shell has to come off for the work scope and go back on, temporarily, so the outage team can take internal clearance and distortion readings. Doing that with heat or torque on every horizontal-joint stud is slow and loads the joint unevenly. A hydraulic closure system does it with a single air-driven pump, in one controlled sequence. This article explains how the closure works, what the kit contains and why the locking collar on each hydraulic nut is the piece that makes the readings trustworthy.

What hydraulic casing closure means on a D11

The D11 is the single-casing HP/IP opposed-flow steam turbine that runs behind most 7F combined-cycle blocks. During a major inspection the outage sequence usually includes at least one tops-on / tops-off cycle: the upper shell is closed temporarily, the joint is loaded, clearance and distortion readings are taken, and the shell is opened again for the repair scope.

Hydraulic closure replaces the top nuts on part of the horizontal-joint studs with hydraulic closure nuts. Those nuts are linked through high-pressure hoses and manifolds to an air-driven pump, and they pressurize simultaneously. The flange faces close with a uniform, controlled load, without full torque and without bolt heating. When the readings are done, pressure is released and the shell can be lifted again.

How a hydraulic closure nut holds the load

A hydraulic closure nut is a piston-and-cylinder assembly that threads onto the existing stud. Under pressure the piston stretches the stud and pulls the flange faces together. The part that matters for a temporary closure is the locking collar (also called the lock ring): once the target pressure is reached, the collar is run down by hand until it seats against the casing. From that moment the load is carried mechanically by the collar, not by the hydraulic pressure.

That is why locking collars matter on a D11 closure:

  • Stable readings. With the collar seated, the joint stays loaded while the team walks the casing with feeler gauges and takes distortion readings. Nothing depends on a pump holding pressure for hours.
  • Uniform load. Every nut in a zone reaches the same pressure before the collars are seated, so the closure is even across the joint instead of sequential.
  • Controlled opening. To open, pressure is applied again, the collars are backed off and the pressure is released. The joint opens in the same controlled sequence in which it closed.
  • No casing modification. The kit is a direct retrofit on the existing studs; the lower nuts stay as standard.

What the D11 hydraulic closure kit contains

The Boltight® D11 Hydraulic Closure System that GIMAN Energy rents from Cleveland, TX is sized to the D11 horizontal-joint stud schedule:

  • 63 hydraulic closure nuts from 2-1/2″ to 7″: 14 × 2-1/2″, 10 × 3″, 8 × 3-1/2″, 8 × 4″, 6 × 4-1/2″, 2 × 5″, 4 × 5-1/2″, 6 × 6″, 2 × 7″.
  • 80 link hoses rated 2,500 bar: 50 × 1.5 m, 10 × 2 m, 10 × 3 m, 10 × 5 m.
  • Two air-driven pumps rated 2,500 bar, a 2-way valve block and four in-line stop valves.
  • Distribution hardware: tee blocks, cross blocks (1 in × 3 out), elbow blocks, gender changers, blank nipples and couplings.
  • Six in-line pressure gauges for zoning by nut size and continuous monitoring during closure.

The manufacturer procedure and calibration records travel with the kit, so the outage file is complete.

Pressure zoning: why the gauges are not optional

The D11 joint carries nine stud sizes. A 7″ stud and a 2-1/2″ stud do not reach the same preload at the same pressure, so the closure is organised in zones by nut size, each with its own gauge. Before mobilization GIMAN reviews the unit’s stud schedule with the plant and agrees the zoning and the closure verification criteria with the steam turbine TFA. On site, pressure is applied zone by zone, read on the in-line gauges, and joint gap is checked with the TFA at the agreed locations. Readings and any deviations go into the field service report with as-found / as-left values.

Two ways to use the kit during your outage

Tooling only. The kit ships to site with hoses, pumps, manifolds and gauges for your prime contractor, OEM crew or independent TFA, with remote support from GIMAN during the job.

Tooling with GIMAN TFAs. Our own field technicians install, operate and remove the kit, run the pre-job review of your bolt schedule and outage sequence, and hand over the field service report. Cover lift, crane and rigging, casing disassembly outside the bolting scope and overall outage coordination stay with your team or prime.

GIMAN Energy is a registered supplier of GE Vernova / FieldCore on SAP Business Network and is prequalified in ComplyWorks (score 98, Severe class), so onboarding through the plant’s normal contractor channels is straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

What is tops-on / tops-off on a D11 steam turbine?

Closing the upper shell temporarily with hydraulic closure nuts on part of the horizontal-joint studs to take internal clearance and distortion readings, then opening it again for the work scope, without full torque or heat.

What does the locking collar on a hydraulic nut do?

Once the nut reaches the target pressure, the locking collar is run down against the casing and carries the load mechanically. The joint stays closed with the pump off, so readings are stable and opening is controlled.

Does the D11 closure kit require casing modifications?

No. It is a direct retrofit that uses the existing studs; the lower nuts stay as standard.

Can the kit be used on other steam turbine frames?

The nut sizes cover 2-1/2″ to 7″ studs. Send the stud schedule of your unit and GIMAN confirms fit with the manufacturer.
