Renting 7FA/7EA casing bolt tensioning tools vs buying: a cost and lead-time view

Every combustion, hot-gas-path and major inspection on a GE 7FA or 7EA opens and closes the casing. Hydraulic casing bolt tensioners and hydraulic nuts do that job faster and with a uniform preload, but the kit only works a handful of days per outage cycle. That is the heart of the rent-versus-buy question. This article lays out the cost and lead-time factors a plant or a prime contractor should weigh, without pretending there is one right answer for every fleet.

What the tooling actually does on a 7FA / 7EA casing

Bolt heating and torque-only methods load the studs unevenly and mark the joint. A turbine casing tensioner stretches the stud axially, the nut is run down by hand and the load is released: every stud sees the same preload, with no thread galling and no heat on the critical path. On the 7EA, hydraulic nuts load several studs at once from a single pump and release with pressure, so bolting and unbolting the horizontal joint takes a fraction of the time of helical nuts.

A 7FA kit covers the 7F stud range (1″ to 2-1/4″ 8UN per the manufacturer data sheet) with an air-driven pump, 4 m and 8 m link hoses, tee blocks, sockets, ratchet wrench and long-bridge assembly. A 7EA kit is sized to the 7E/7EA stud schedule with pump, hoses, tee blocks and manifolds. Both travel in custom cases with calibration records.

The cost side: what buying really includes

The purchase price of a casing kit is only the first line. Over the life of the tooling an owner also carries:

  • Calibration and maintenance. Pumps, gauges and tensioners need periodic calibration and seal service to keep the records an outage file requires.
  • Storage and logistics. Cases, climate, inventory control and shipping between plants if the fleet shares a kit.
  • Utilization. A plant uses casing tooling during outages only. Between outages the capital sits idle.
  • Fit risk. Stud sizes vary by unit and revision (7F.03, 7F.04, 7F.05; some 7EA casings have clash areas). A kit bought for one unit may need additions for the next.
  • People. Someone on site has to know the manufacturer procedure and the tensioning sequence, every time.

Renting turns all of that into per-project line items: kit rental, TFA days, mobilization and consumables, quoted separately on the RFQ. GIMAN does not publish a rate card or fixed lead times; each outage is quoted on its own dates and scope.

The lead-time side: availability versus procurement

Buying new tooling from the manufacturer is a procurement cycle: specification, quotation, PO, manufacture, shipment and receiving inspection. That is fine for a fleet owner planning years ahead; it is a problem when an outage moves forward or a unit reveals a stud schedule the existing kit does not cover.

Renting works the other way round. You send the unit, frame revision, bolt schedule and outage window; GIMAN confirms kit availability, matches nut and tensioner sizes to your schedule and ships from Cleveland, TX. For Canada and Mexico the temporary import is coordinated with your customs broker or importer of record, project by project. Kits are checked against the drawings before shipping so the fit is confirmed before mobilization, not on the turbine deck.

When buying makes sense, and when renting does

Buying tends to make sense for a fleet owner with several identical units, a predictable outage calendar, its own bolting crew and a calibration program already in place.

Renting tends to make sense for a single unit or a mixed fleet, for peakers and cogen plants that open the casing rarely, for prime contractors who need a kit for one outage, and for any plant that wants the manufacturer procedure executed by technicians who run it every month rather than every few years.

There is also a middle path: rent the tooling only, and put your own crew or independent TFA on it, with remote support from GIMAN during the job.

Two ways to rent from GIMAN

Tooling only. Kit shipped to site with hoses, pump, manifolds and gauges; the manufacturer procedure and calibration records travel with it.

Tooling with GIMAN TFAs. Our own field technicians run the pre-job review of your bolt schedule, drawings and outage sequence, install and operate the kit, verify the tensioning and hand over a field service report with as-found / as-left readings. Cover lift, rigging and overall outage coordination stay with your prime.

Frequently asked questions

Do you publish rental rates or lead times?

No. Each project is quoted on its own scope and dates: kit rental, TFA days, mobilization and consumables as separate line items. Rate card on request.

Which 7FA revisions does the kit cover?

7F.03, 7F.04 and 7F.05, subject to the unit’s bolt schedule. Send the stud sizes with the RFQ and GIMAN confirms the tooling before mobilization.

Are there 7EA casings where hydraulic tooling does not fit?

Some 7EA casings have areas where tooling can clash with the casing. GIMAN reviews the drawings and bolt schedule before shipping and confirms fit with the manufacturer.

Can we rent the tooling without technicians?

Yes. Tooling-only rental ships the kit with the manufacturer procedure and calibration records for your crew, OEM team or independent TFA, with remote support from GIMAN.
